Selective suppression of taboo information in visual word recognition: Evidence for cognitive control on semantics.

چکیده

The present study investigated the role of cognitive control on semantic information during visual word recognition by exploiting taboo stimuli in a lexical-decision task. We relied delta plots and electromyography (EMG) to assess different hypothetical mechanisms control. Previous research suggests that slow down performance across variety tasks due their attention-grabbing nature. One possibility is counteracts detrimental effects connotation actively dampening such prepotent yet task-irrelevant information. Consistent with this hypothesis, we found reversal interference effect slowest responses, signaling deployment selective suppression mechanism needs time fully accrue. For electromyographic data, focused partial errors (trials showing subthreshold activation incorrect response hand) index response-monitoring processes intervening prevent correct errors. no modulation likelihood and, more generally, accuracy as function connotation. Taken together, results suggest may intervene selectively suppress fast-acting distracting information, indicating controlled processing optimizes match task-relevant goals. assessment of deep word knowledge in elementary and advanced iranian efl learners: a comparison of selective and productive wat tasks

testing plays a vital role in any language teaching program. it allows teachers and stakeholders, including program administrators, parents, admissions officers and prospective employers to be assured that the learners are progressing according to an accepted standard (douglas, 2010). the problems currently facing language testers have both practical and theoretical implications but the first i...

Evidence for Early Morphological Decomposition in Visual Word Recognition

We employ a single-trial correlational MEG analysis technique to investigate early processing in the visual recognition of morphologically complex words. Three classes of affixed words were presented in a lexical decision task: free stems (e.g., taxable), bound roots (e.g., tolerable), and unique root words (e.g., vulnerable, the root of which does not appear elsewhere). Analysis was focused on...

Evidence for the activation of sensorimotor information during visual word recognition: the body-object interaction effect.

We examined the effects of sensorimotor experience in two visual word recognition tasks. Body-object interaction (BOI) ratings were collected for a large set of words. These ratings assess perceptions of the ease with which a human body can physically interact with a word's referent. A set of high BOI words (e.g., mask) and a set of low BOI words (e.g., ship) were created, matched on imageabili...

Evidence of flexible coding in visual word recognition.

In 3 visual word recognition experiments, the authors examined Ss' differential dependence on phonological versus orthographic information in accessing the lexicon. The critical manipulation was the presence or absence of pseudohomophones in the nonword context of a lexical decision task. Ss received a list with either no pseudohomophones (NPsH group) or 17%-30% pseudohomophones among the nonwo...
